Ostrich Festival

We had an Ostrich Festival here in Chandler a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, this town used to have a lot of ostrich farms.

So the first thing we do is go see the ostriches. Hi buddy!

Next, we go eat ostrich burgers!

I have to say, it wasn't the tastiest thing. I've had ostrich steak before at a French restaurant. It was so good that I wondered why more restaurants don't serve ostrich meat. After this burger, I see why.

Aside from the ostriches, there was a petting zoo. Who was the barber for this guy?

They also closed off a strip for motorcyclists to show off their skillz. How in the world???

My favorite things to photograph though were the carnival rides. We didn't ride any because just the lines for tickets were way too long, let alone the rides. We'll wait till our future kids come along who'll probably make us take them. =)

The New Academy of Sciences

I was sad when they closed this in Golden Gate Park & opened it up in the Mission, but it has come back & blew me away! I LOVE this place! It makes me wanna move back to SF just so I can get a yearly pass! If you're ever in SF, I highly recommend a visit to the Academy of Sciences.

Here's the 4 story rainforest enclosed in a humungous glass bubble:

The view from one of the upper floors. One of the vines had leaf cutter ants marching on it. And yep, that's people under the water. =)

The lovely creatures inside the rainforest area. My fav is the chameleon -it's so cute!

The awesome sea creatures in the aquarium area. You can spend hours here!

And my favorite sea creature of all time? The sea dragon!

The 2.5 acre roof has more than a million native plants living on it.

The restaurant/food court area has some very yummy food, including pho! So go check it out if you haven't done so already.

Last pic -the Bay Bridge. It's just as beautiful to look at as the Golden Gate, and I love the upper & lower deck separation. Back in 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake caused one part of the upper deck to collapse on the lower deck. (Read about it here.)
And here everyone is driving on the lower deck with no worries. Really, there's nothing to worry about. It's beautiful!

Back to Cali

I always love going home to visit family & friends, and now that we're in Arizona, I love going home even more, especially during springtime when the hills are green & full of mustard flowers.

These were all taken while we were in Napa for the weekend, wine tasting and eating at Thomas Keller's restaurants. After a long, large meal the night before, Drew & I had to do a little hiking.

Mamma mia! I was in heaven. Give me a field of flowers or grass & I can run around in it all day!

Drew, on his favorite tree, the oak.

I have yet to find out what this tree is, but there are plenty in Northern CA and they produce these bursts of happy blossoms every spring.

Nyla

So I leave town for a week to visit family & friends back in the SF Bay Area and when I come back, I notice the photos from my blog are all missing!!! I had apparently somehow exceeded my bandwith on Photobucket and they took down my photos. Grrrrrr. I thought I had to delete some, so I deleted my Nyla post to see if that would help, but no. So now I have to upload all my old pics thru Picasa, and I'm reposting Nyla's pics, with some new ones! =)

Nyla's a bichon poodle mix that weighs only 2 lbs! She's so tiny!

The second she turns around, he jumps back & takes off for the bedroom. What a scaredy cat!
From Nyla

Sadly (very, very sadly), we had to give Nyla away. The kitties never understood what this little creature 1/3 their size was and were in high stress mode the whole time. Here are my last pics of Nyla on the night we had to give her away. I'm happy that I found her a great home where she'll be loved to pieces though.
